Bartholomew Nnaji

born 1956

Robotics professor who built Nigeria's first indigenous power company

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Nigeria Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

A robotics and computer-integrated manufacturing professor who came home, served twice as a minister, and built the only integrated power project Nigeria has.

Bartholomew Nnaji is a Nigerian engineer, professor of computer-integrated manufacturing and robotics at the University of Pennsylvania, and one of the originators of the e-design concept, in which engineers in different places design, assemble and test the same product over the internet.

He returned to Nigeria in 1993 to serve as federal Minister of Science and Technology, and was Minister of Power from July 2011 to August 2012. In 2000 he founded Geometric Power Limited, Nigeria's first indigenously owned power development company, behind the country's only integrated power project at Aba. He has since set up a robotics and artificial intelligence institute in Nigeria.
