She wrote the lives of Nigerian women — motherhood, migration, second-class citizenship — across more than twenty books, and was appointed OBE in 2005.
Born in July 1944, Emecheta wrote novels, plays, autobiography and children's books, much of it about the position of women in Nigeria and in Britain.
Her work brought considerable international recognition, including an OBE in 2005.
