Born Albert Chinualumogu Achebe in the Igbo town of Ogidi in eastern Nigeria in November 1930, Achebe published Things Fall Apart in 1958. It has since sold more than twenty million copies and been translated into over fifty languages.
The book's achievement was to render an African society whole and on its own terms at the moment colonialism arrived, rather than as the backdrop to somebody else's story. Generations of African novelists have written in the space it opened.
