Majekodunmi Fasheke was born in March 1963 and signed to Tabansi Records in 1987, releasing Prisoner of Conscience and becoming Nigeria's leading reggae artist.
Its single Send Down the Rain was the most popular song in Nigeria in 1988 and won six PMAN awards; the rainstorm that ended one of the worst droughts in Nigerian history was widely taken as its doing, and the name Rainmaker stayed with him. A devotee of both Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix, he built a fusion of Jamaican rhythm with African instruments and forms. He died in New York on 1 June 2020, aged fifty-seven.
