One of the actresses who built Nollywood into the second-largest film industry in the world, with a career spanning three decades and a place on the TIME 100.
Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was eighteen when she took her first leading role, in Venom of Justice in 1995, and she is one of a small group of actresses — with Genevieve Nnaji and a handful of others — who turned Nollywood from a direct-to-video cottage industry into something with stars, an audience across the continent and a diaspora market.
She has appeared in several hundred films across three decades, in Yoruba and in English, and moved into television and international production. In 2013 TIME named her one of the hundred most influential people in the world, one of very few African screen actors ever listed, and she was among the first African film figures to build a mass online following, which she has used politically.
She has campaigned on domestic violence, on the Chibok schoolgirls, and against corruption, and was made an ambassador for the UN refugee agency's work in Nigeria. She has also been consistently outspoken about how little Nollywood's biggest stars were paid in the years when the industry was being built.
