Elechi Amadi was born at Aluu near Port Harcourt in May 1934 and became a novelist and playwright known for work on traditional life and the place of the supernatural in rural Nigeria.
His historical trilogy of village life — The Concubine (1966), The Great Ponds (1969) and The Slave (1978) — is his best-known work. He died at Port Harcourt in June 2016.
